Please feel free to compare my dub to this one as a technical matter. I think my copy is in worse condition, and I played with it in Audacity using the default Click Removal and Noise Reduction. The stylus was an unidentified Shure 78 RPM and played on a Dual 1009. Ran the output through a generic Phono input and through a BSR Graphic Equalizer into my computer motherboard audio.

In a time when exoticism was a rise, composer, Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov (or Korsakoff) took advantage of it and "Song India" as well as his epic Scheherezade are among his well known repertoire. His compositional contributions earned him his place as The Five alongside Borodin, Mussorgsky, Cui, and Balakirev. Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) and his legacy of preserving Russian folklore in music as well as composing music borrowing from other cultures (as in the case with Scheherezade and "Song of India") led to a backlash towards the end of his life with the rise of 20th century music. "Song of India" is from Rimsky-Korsakov's fairy tale opera, Sadko, in which the Indian guest is presented. His lush, expressive, exotic style was supposed to reflect the musical culture of countries far and unknown to Western culture. Whether the "exotic" countries thought that the music reflected their culture(s) when they heard pieces like the "Song of India" is unknown. Identity aside, the signature intervallic slides and "exotic" intervals (that one would hear in pieces such as "Scheherezade" are very much exaggerated in this recording, but the overall aural execution is well done and the evocation of a fairy tale fantasy is beautifully executed within the balance of the group.
